May 21, 2012                                                        IT’S BOOK FAIR WEEK!

Dear Parents,

TESTING IS OVER!  Thank you for all your support and help you gave to your child during this time.  The children all worked very hard, and I’m proud of the effort they all gave to the test.  Thanks to all who supplied gum and/or snacks.  I appreciate you all!

This week brings OPEN HOUSE and the book fair!  Tomorrow night (Tuesday) from 6:30-8:00 you are welcome to come and see some of the work your child has done in third grade!  They’ve been working hard to surprise you with some beautiful artwork and poetry, as well as an abundance of activities we’ve done during our school year.  The book fair is also available for your viewing at open house.  (Read on for more events surrounding our book fair.)  Also, it’s a wonderful opportunity to view the 4th grade classes and meet the possible teachers next year.  Please join us for this very grand event!

Now for our book fair events...Mrs. Kennedy and her crew of wonderful parent helpers will transform the library into a Hawaiian oasis this week!  We will preview the book fair on Monday.  Our “purchasing day” as a class will be at our regular library time on Tuesday.  Your child is welcome to bring money to purchase books from the flier that went home last week.  If he/she forgets, any day during recess or lunch this week is another option for buying books.  BUT IT DOESN’T STOP THERE!  The following are the events scheduled around the book fair:

1.        Design your own lei (any items EXCEPT flowers).  BE CREATIVE!

2.        Design a unique pair of flip-flops to decorate the book fair!  (Don’t wear them, but bring them to the library for judging.)

3.       Identify the teachers in the “postcards from paradise past.”  Will your child be able to recognize me as a young girl?

4.       Friday is TACKY TOURIST DAY!  The class with the most participation wins an ice cream party.  I guess the teacher MUST dress up.  Hmmm…how tacky can I get?  My true colors may come out!

5.       May 24 from 3:30-5:00 is “grandparent’s day” (or a grand adult would work if grandma and grandpa are not available).  Come and have a luau with your child!  Treats will be provided as well as a GATER hula dance!

6.       Finally, there’s a coloring contest.  Pick up the forms in the library.  Be creative!  Get out that glitter, bobbles, stickers, etc.

The tendency after testing is finished is for the students think that SCHOOL IS OUT!  Please know that I have discussed with the students that we will continue learning (and having fun) right up until the last day of school.  Getting off task and breaking rules will only help students get unsatisfactory grades on their report cards, which will take them out of the running for awards.  I have stated that rules will be enforced until the last day of school.  Anything you can do to help to remind your child of your expectations will help us to run smoothly at school.  Believe it or not, I still have a lot planned, and still have many grades to input before we finish up our year.  Your help on this matter is appreciated.

This week we will be exploring biographies.  Your child should have either gotten a book from the library, chosen one of my books in class, or they need a quick trip to the library.  We’ll have fun with this genre!

In math, we will be working on memorizing our division facts.  We’ll also be doing some fun hands-on math projects, and will be working on some skills for fourth grade.

We’ll also be doing some fun writing projects in class.  We’re going to work on VOICE and writing dialogue by first drawing comics, and then rewriting our story with correct punctuation and paragraphing.  They’ll enjoy this project!

We’ll also learn about Kearney Mansion before our field trip this Friday.  Please make sure that your child’s permission slip and $3.00 for the trip has been submitted.  Thank you to those that have agreed to chaperone on this trip.  If you are a driver, please be at the school by ____________ to discuss our trip and expectations for the day.  I am NOT SURE if the gift shop will be open, but if your child would like to bring a small amount of money, there are some neat little knick-knacks from “the gold old’ days” that are neat-o!

We are in need of a few items for the end of the year.  First off, I’d like everyone to bring a pillowcase that is LIGHT COLORED.  They may be new or slightly used.  We’ll have an autograph day during the last week of school.  Please send one in for your child as soon as possible so that I can make sure that everyone has one.  They can be purchased inexpensively from Target or WallMart.

Also, I’d like to make class t-shirts for field day.  Again, these should be light colored or white.  New or used is fine, though they are quite cute, and I usually see students wearing them for years to come. They should be at school by next Monday so that we can make them before field day (play day).

We will begin our “How To” reports this week.  We’ll sign up for a day/time and your child should be ready for his/her report.  Refer to the letter in your child’s folder from last week for ideas.  If you are interested in watching your child’s report, please let me know the best day/time and I’ll try to accommodate your schedule.  It’s fun to be teacher!!  I’m looking forward to learning your child’s talents!  If there are supplies that your child needs, please have your child talk to me so that all materials are ready before the presentation.  Cue cards are fine if they are needed!  The presentation shouldn’t be any longer than 10 or 15 minutes.  We have 29 to squeeze in before the end of school!

Homework will resume this week!  (I find once homework stops, the kids think that summer is on!)

I’ll see you tomorrow evening!  Please let me know if you have questions or concerns.

With thanks,

Lisa Gatewood
